She began her career as a veterinarian in 1996 after graduating from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine with a ‘Doctor of Veterinary Medicine’ degree. Before becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Schmidlin was a registered nurse working primarily in emergency medicine for over 20 years after graduating from Owens Community College with an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Nursing in 1985. However, her first love were non-human animals as she began her career as a registered veterinary technician in 1978 before dabbling into human healthcare as a nurse and finally returning to the love of her life as a veterinary doctor.

She has bred and shown Persian and Himalayan cats since 1974.
